The Illawarra African Community Association celebrates culture, strengthens belonging, and builds a thriving future for African families across the Illawarra region.
The Illawarra African Community Association (IACA) is a legally registered, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the wellbeing, dignity, voice, and future of African people in the Illawarra. Africans are among the fastest-growing migrant groups in the region — growing 4–6% per year — yet there was no unified African-led body to coordinate cultural welfare, advocacy and community development. IACA changes that.
We are community-led, community-driven, and built to last. From cultural programs and youth mentoring to aged care pathways and advocacy, IACA is the home every African family in the Illawarra deserves.
Language classes, cultural festivals, African arts and performance programs celebrating our rich heritage.
Employment pathways, education scholarships, family support services and community advocacy.
Child-care, mentoring, counselling and recreational programs for young Africans in the Illawarra.
Culturally appropriate care pathways, respite, and social connection for African elders.
Join our growing community and access events, programs and governance participation.
Your contribution directly funds cultural programs, family support and community initiatives.
Share your skills and time. Every hour you give strengthens the community.
IACA was established because our community is growing, our needs are real, and our time is now. After 16+ committee meetings, extensive community consultation, and the development of 6 governance documents, IACA was formally incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009.
African communities in the Illawarra are growing 4–6% annually — population doubling within 15 years — with no unified advocacy body.
Before IACA, there was no African-led body in the Illawarra to coordinate cultural welfare, advocacy and community development.
African children need culturally appropriate spaces to grow, learn and stay connected to their heritage.
African Australians face higher rates of unemployment, discrimination and policing — requiring dedicated advocacy and support.
There are no culturally appropriate aged-care pathways for African elders in the Illawarra. IACA is building those pathways.
"When a community chooses to stand together, it stops being a collection of individuals and becomes a force capable of shaping its own future."
A vibrant, united and empowered African community thriving in the Illawarra region.
To celebrate African culture and empower African families in the Illawarra to thrive with dignity, inclusion, and cultural pride — across generations.
The IACA Establishment Committee was selected based on practical insight and demonstrated commitment to the community.

IACA is committed to transparency and accountability. Our key governance documents are publicly available below.
The Illawarra African Community Association was built on the vision, sacrifice and dedication of five founding committee members. After more than 16 committee meetings, extensive community consultation, and the development of six governance documents, these individuals formally incorporated IACA under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009. Their names are etched permanently in the history of the association.
"When a community chooses to stand together, it stops being a collection of individuals and becomes a force capable of shaping its own future."
